Welcome to PicMad

Hello to my fellow budding photographer!

Hello to the beginner who is just learning to use their point-and-shoot; hello to the amateur who's starting to want something more creative from their photography; hello to the enthusiastic novice who is developing their creative eye and starting to build a nice portfolio of images; hello to photographers in the intermediate category who have the equipment and the know-how to progress into the professional arena; and hello to the professional snapper who has used their skills to make a career out of their craft.

Hello also to those [like me] who see photography as a relaxing hobby, something that's worth the patience and time of waiting for that perfect moment before squeezing the shutter, those who are willing to get up before dawn to capture a stunning sunrise. Those [like me] who would like to help others and help themselves to develop your photography prowess in an objective and constructive environment -- those who want to LEARN TOGETHER.

To all of you, welcome to PicMad. My name is Chris.

My vision for PicMad is to have photographers of all persuasions and skill levels come together to show off their photography as well as providing constructive comments on others' and hopefully having some great discussions on the art of taking the perfect shot.

The more participants who join, the better and more effective this blog will be. PicMad is totally free, and at no point will I try to sell you something or try and get money out of you. Your loyal readership and participation is all I ask. I promise I'll listen to and read all your comments, and if you have a photography project of your own I'll be happy to check it out and recommend it through this site.

Also, feel free to post any photos you've taken. It's a great way to get exposure for your shots and a great way to get people discussing photography.

As a warm introduction to PicMad, I'd like to say Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my recently adopted kitten, Belle.

See you soon!

hi Chris, and welcome to Orble..

what great shots!! and belle kitty is adorable.

my aim for this year is to purchase a good digcam, as at the moment i'm using my mamas Kodakshare, and she wants it back lol

i've managed to get a few good shots out of it though. Any suggestions for a good digcam would be appreciated. I want to spend about $300-$400. A friend of mine has a mobile phone with an excellent camera option, i'm wondering if this might be the way to go also, as i'm wanting to upgrade my phone.

Snap on..

~Lily

Thanks Rosie and Harry.

Lily - I don't know a lot about point-and-shoots (I'm looking for one myself), but my sister just bought a Nikon Coolpix S200 which is a great little camera. She paid about AU$270 which was a good deal. RRP is about $300 and it does everything you'd want in a compact camera and it's easy to use.

Also, I was using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ2 the other day and it was taking really great shots. It's a little bit bigger than usual point-and-shoots but it's got a great screen and a 10X zoom lens. They're usually around AU$750 but you can pick them up on eBay for around $450, so that'd be worth having a look at too.

Failing these, you can't go wrong with a Canon PowerShot A560.

I wouldn't recommend buying a phone to use as a camera. I have a phone with one of the better cameras in it (3 megapixels, flash, etc) and while it's fine for taking photos in perfect conditions, it's no good whatsoever in poor light and it has very poor zoom.

Hope this helps you out Lily. Let me know if you need any more info.
