Aussie Backyard - Chris

The weather here in Brisbane has been overcast and rainy for at least the last month, bringing with it some much needed rain to our dry soil and empty dams.

I set my SLR's white balance to overcast and found it produced some really rich colours, especially greens and browns.

Because shooting anything with sky was out of the question, I chose a few subjects around the yard that caught my eye and focused on their detail.

Unused Barrow

This project was heaps of fun and I really enjoyed using my telephoto 40-150mm (which is actually 80-300mm because of lens conversion) to bring the subject to prominence as well as blur the background. I didn't use a flash because there was such an even light coming from the clouds.

Wow, I am impressed with the photos and how you can think of different ideas and visions from just simple stuff in the backyard like the pegs!

I must learn some tips from you!

Haha thanks Amy. I actually spent hours taking shot after shot until I got just the right angle and composition I liked, so these are definitely the best of a big bunch.

To be honest I don't have many tips for this type of photo, other than simply to think about the composition as you're shooting. Also, position the focal point off-centre -- like the wheelbarrow wheel above. This gives the eye a chance to wander around before fixating.

Thanks for commenting, and email me any pics you take!

I agree. They are great shots, you have a real talent. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
